Pardon our dust as we add content and rearrange for a cleaner experience.
We are committed to pursuing safe healthcare environments by sharing information about the problems in accuracy in readings of pulse oximeters on varying skin tones. We hope to work to increase availability of effective units, and inspire production of more reliable pulse oximeters.
Please enjoy our site, where you will find newspaper articles, scientific research, and all the resources we can find on the subject, as we work together to make the world a safer place.
Thank you for coming us alongside in this effort.

“Unfortunately,” says Valbuena, “the pulse oximetry bias problem is really bad and could be affecting huge numbers of patients. Our results suggest that in the VA alone, there may be over 75,000 instances a year where low blood oxygen is missed in a Black [patient] yet would have been detected if pulse oximeters functioned as well as they do in White [patient]. It is incredibly important that we fix it soon.”

“Currently, increased awareness of the issue among providers remains the only option of mitigating this problem.”
